The installation standards on every roof we build
Two roofs can use the same shingle and look identical from the street, yet one lasts 25 years and the other starts leaking in five. The difference is in details you can't see once the job is done. These are the standards we hold every crew to:
- Nailing to the manufacturer's high-wind pattern. Nails land in the reinforced nailing strip, driven flush, never over-driven or crooked, with the nail count the manufacturer requires for the higher wind warranty.
- Starter strip on every eave and rake. A factory starter course gives the first row of shingles a sealant line so wind can't catch the edge, the most common place a storm starts peeling a roof.
- Drip edge on every edge. Required by the 2021 IRC, it keeps water off your fascia and out of the decking edge.
- Ice and water membrane where water concentrates. Valleys, around chimneys, skylights and pipe penetrations, and at wall intersections.
- New flashing, not reused. Old step flashing is bent, rusted or cut from the previous tear-off. We replace it and add kick-out flashing wherever a roof edge dies into a wall.
- Pipe boots rated for Texas sun. We use long-life boots or boots with protective collars, because standard rubber is the first thing to crack.
- Ventilation calculated, not guessed. We balance soffit intake with ridge exhaust and remove conflicting vents that short-circuit airflow.
- Decking fastened and verified. Loose sheets are re-nailed, damaged sheets replaced, and gaps checked before underlayment goes down and the city's dry-in inspection happens.
We photograph these steps during the job, so you have a record of what's under your shingles. That record also helps when you sell your home or file a future insurance claim.
